Neighborhood Streatham means literally "The hamlet on the street". The street in question, the London to Brighton Way, was the Roman road from the capital Londinium to the South coast near Portslade, today within Brighton and Hove. Brixton, instead, hosted settlements only from around the 18th century, when the original woodland was gradually reduced until the area was covered in farmland and market gardens known for game and strawberries. In recent years Brixton has hosted a regular farmers' market on Station Road, as well as pop-up restaurants and shops. New art galleries, delicatessens, bars, cafes and vintage clothing stores, particularly in and around Brixton Village Market have also opened. As for Streatham, in November 2013, the new Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre opened to the public. The leisure centre houses a 60x30m indoor ice rink with 1,000 rink-side seats, a six-lane 25 m swimming pool, 13 m teaching pool, four-court sports hall and a gym with 100 stations. The jazz venue Hideaway continues Streatham's long entertainment tradition. It features live performances of jazz, funk, swing and soul music as well as stand-up comedy nights. housed in shipping containers! For films, the Ritzy cinema is where locals go. And for those in search of a party, Brixtonโs famous live venues, including the Brixton Academy and Hootananny are where itโs at. Takeaways, cafes, and small bites are available on the neighbouring New Park Road or in along Brixton Hill just behind this. Continuing walking south along Brixton Hill, one can find within 3/4 minutes Asafo, a Ghanaian Restaurant to the right into Morrish Rd. Past that there is a big junction with the S Circular Road, where you'll be able to find a typical British pub: the Crown & Sceptre. On the north side of Brixton Hill, instead, just by walking down about 4/5 minutes, there is a Caribbean restaurant with outdoor space called Negril. Transit Transport links to Central London are available all around the house, which is just in between Tooting Bec and Streatham stations, connecting you to Northern tube line and Overground services. Several quick bus routes with bus stops just are around the corner. If you fancy a ride, Uber and Gett are nice and cheaper alternatives to taxis.
