Early in Lochโs development, the townspeople recognised the need for a local and accessible school to provide the fluctuating numbers of children with an elementary and socialising education.
Petitions were sent to the Victorian Department of Education for this purpose and by 1889 the school had been constructed and a Head Teacher, Francis William Clarke, appointed. He remained at Loch for the next 28 years and his time there provides the focus for a broad exploration into the establishment and growth of Loch.
The schoolโs fluctuating numbers reflect the transient nature of Lochโs early population, while Clarkeโs experiences with the Victorian Department of Education demonstrate the difficulties of dealing with a remote and officious bureaucracy.
In many ways the history of this school and its teacher provide valuable information about living in what was then an isolated town, and the efforts of its residents to establish a sense of place and community.

When it comes to shopping, Loch is an absolute haven for art, crafts, antiques, second-hand goods and giftware. A wander along the main street will provide ample opportunities to score something lovely and unique to take home.
There's a good kids playground in the main street with a skate park and a shelter. From here you can wander through the highway underpass to the railway reserve. The underpass has boards displaying information about Gippsland's famed giant earthworms.
Across the highway, there is an additional playground in the Memorial Reserve along with toilets and shelters. You can camp here by arrangement with or without power and showers.
Loch Village Lions Market is held every 2nd Sunday of the month. The venue changes according to the season: in the warmer months from October to April it's at the Loch Railway Station Reserve, when it's colder from May to September it's in the Loch Public Hall in Smith Street. A range of other events are held throughout the year including the Food & Wine Festival and Garden Festival.
The Loch Township โ The delightful country town of Loch lies amongst lush, rolling hills and farmland just off the South Gippsland Highway in Victoria. What once was a busy highway through the center of town is now a very beautiful, garden-lined street that has thrived since the town by-pass was completed in 2008.
