The Neighborhood:
It’s hard to believe that Dartmouth’s bustling town centre with all its shops, bars, restaurants and heritage destinations is just two minutes’ walk away. The End House is ideal for exploring all the centuries-old harbour town centre has to offer on foot, from the quay, a plethora of shops, pubs and restaurants to its stunning architecture. Within a few minutes’ drive by car is the castle, royal naval college and beaches and within easy reach are the pretty market towns of Brixham, Torquay, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, stunning beaches of Blackpool Sands, Beesands, Slapton Sands and Man Sands and Dart Valley walks. Whether you are a walker, sightseer or beach goer, this is the perfect base for you.
Clinging to a steep hillside and cradling an exceptionally pretty harbour, Dartmouth’s ancient narrow streets reflect a prosperous maritime history, which began in the 1100s, when the medieval town was one of England’s principal ports. The End House is tucked away from Dartmouth’s hustle and bustle so is the perfect place to relax away from the action. But just few minutes’ walk away from are the town’s treasures: independent shops, art galleries, delicatessens and chic restaurants lend it a real Knightsbridge-on-Sea atmosphere quite unlike anywhere else in the region, and a cobbled marketplace with colourful stalls selling local produce make it a real foodie destination. Don’t forget the pubs: the town’s naval history means there is a roaring trade in traditional nautical inns in Dartmouth.
The town is a gem of the south-west and you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding things to do. Crime writer Agatha Christie’s home Greenway is a delight, while stunning walks, the ancient Dartmouth Castle, a fascinating museum and the royal naval college are real treasures to be explored.
Catch an art house movie at The Flavel, Dartmouth’s newly refurbished cinema, theatre and arts centre or spend a fun, adventurous hour winning your freedom at Dartmouth Escapes Rooms. The town also holds a range of annual festivals including the regatta, a food festival, a craft festival and Shakespeare week.
Dartmouth’s epic naval history is reflected in its modern residents’ enduring love affair with the water, and visitors flock to the harbour to enjoy the sights as well as to get out and enjoy the myriad watersports on offer. From sailing, paddleboarding and sea kayaking to rollicking RIB rides and scenic boat and ferry trips, there is a water-based activity for all ages and abilities in Dartmouth.
There are many beaches within easy reach of the town – each one offering a different experience, whether it is building sandcastles or walking along the coast. Myriad locations offer quiet secluded coves, long expanses of golden sands and stunning shingle beaches, flanked by striking cliffs.
Further afield, quirky market towns, fish markets, stately homes and theme parks abound – Dartmouth is surrounded by a plethora of places to visit and things to do in the stunning South Hams. Woodlands Theme Park is a great day out for all the family, National Trust property Coleton Fishacre ticks boxes for history buffs and gardeners, and Brixham and Totnes offer great restaurants, character and scope for atmospheric ambles.
Getting Around:
The best way to explore Dartmouth is by foot but there are so many towns, beaches and walks to explore just a short drive away. However, free parking throughout Dartmouth is limited and the cheap and easy Dartmouth Park and Ride is possibly the best option. Dartmouth Park and Ride is a five-minute drive away and costs £5 a day from 7am-6pm and £3 after 2pm. Overnight is free. To get there from the town centre, follow the signs to Totnes on the A379) past Lidl then take the first left. Pay by coin, card or Ringo App. Buses are every 20 mins from 8am-7pm or every 10mins in school holidays from 9.30am-7pm. You can still park outside these hours and take the Stagecoach, which runs until 11.30pm.
There are some spaces on the street and the adjacent road on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and in the nearby pay-and-display car park. There is a pay-and-display car park just past The Royal Hotel opposite Marks & Spencer. Just opposite Lake Street, The Old Market t has free parking except on market days on a Tuesday and a Friday. On-street parking on North Embankment is free from 1 October-30 April. Between 1 May and 30 September, most on-street parking is one or two hours.

Summary: The property was easy to find, parking can be challenging depending on the time of day though. House was clean on arrival but not overly toddler friendly. Overall our stay was very pleasant but I wouldn’t say the property was very child friendly.
