One of the must-see buildings in the area is the combined Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and Museum of Santa Maria Novella which is, architecturally speaking, one of the most important Gothic churches in Tuscany. Look out for the incredible art in the church’s interior, specifically Ghirlandaio's fresco cycle in the Tornabuoni Chapel, Giotto’s crucifix and the beautiful windows by Filippino Lippi. The city’s rail terminus, the Santa Maria Novella railway station, was completed in 1992 and the modern architecture drew some criticism for clashing with the Gothic style of the surrounding buildings. Aside from the obvious spots to visit, the museum and the basilica, the Neighbourhood is also home to a lesser-known must-see spot, the Santa Maria Novella pharmacy. This grand old apothecary is said to be the world’s oldest pharmacy and dispensed treatments during the Black Death in 1348.
